Set up any Google connector using OAuth Client ID and Client Secret

Modified on Tue, 20 Jun, 2023 at 3:31 PM

Omniscope needs an OAuth client ID and client secret to authenticate to your Google account in order to use a Google connector, e.g. Sheet, DoubleClick, Google Analytics.

You will be registering your Omniscope deployment as a client app within a project in the Google Cloud Platform.

Warning about account type:

For this it is recommended that you use a Google Cloud project associated with a registered Google Cloud Organisation, rather than an individual Google account, since you will be able to set it up as an "internal" app, i.e.for any internal users within the organisation without additional verification by Google.

If you proceed with an individual Google account, you can only configure the OAuth client as an "external" app, but without further verification by Google, your users will only be able to use it if their email addresses have been listed as "test users", and only with a warning when they connect and establish consent. External apps are best for where you are proceeding with full verification by Google, for access by anyone anywhere, unlikely to be desirable for typical use cases in Omniscope.

To generate OAuth2 credentials the first step is to open the Google API Console Credentials page and then:

  1. Click Select a project, then NEW PROJECT, and enter a name for the project, and optionally, edit the provided project ID. Click Create.
  2. On the Credentials page, select Create credentials, then OAuth client ID.

  3. You may be prompted to set a product name on the Consent screen; if so, click Configure consent screen, supply the requested information. See notes above about the account type (internal vs external). Then click Save to return to the Credentials screen.
  4. Select Web Application for the Application Type.

  5. Add http://tc.visokio.com/oauth/login/ to the Authorized redirect URIs

  6. Click Create.
  7. On the page that appears, copy the client ID and client secret to your clipboard
  8. Go to your Omniscope Evo project, add a Google connector (e.g. Google Analytics block)
  9. In the Connection section you will be able to add and configure a connection by inserting the copied client ID and secret.

Enabling APIs

Omniscope uses various APIs, provided by Google, to provide access to the relevant resources. Some APIs are enabled by default. Other APIs (eg. Google Drive), must be manually enabled. If you see an error message when you attempt to use your client ID and client secret, you may need to do this.

To enable an API:

  1. Select the project in the console.
  2. Click 'Enabled APIs and services' in the left-hand menu.
  3. You should see a list of currently enabled APIs, and their usage.
  4. Click 'Enable API's and Services'. Find the service you want to enable, select it then click 'Enable'.
  5. You should now see the API listed in the APIs and services page.
