Setting up Omniscope

Omniscope is available on the Amazon AWS marketplace. This option allows you to quickly deploy Omniscope on an AWS EC2 compute instance (VM). Using this approach, you will be able to quickly configure a cloud machine with specifications to suit your needs, and start using Omniscope in a matter of minutes.  

At time of writing, Omniscope is available on AWS using a 'Bring your own license' model: you will need to purchase a Business or Enterprise license from Visokio to activate the Omniscope app pre-installed on the EC2 instance.

Once the EC2 instance has been provisioned, Omniscope needs to be activated and set up. This operation currently requires temporary SSH access to the instance. 

You can find the command to SSH into the machine from the EC2 console. Make sure you are connecting using the ubuntu user.

Once you have an SSH session open, just run  ./setup.sh (located in the home folder of the ubuntu user). The script will ask for the license key and administrator password.

Since this will be a completely headless setup, make sure you use a Business or Enterprise Omniscope license.

Make sure the admin password is at least 6 characters long, although you are strongly recommended to use a much stronger password unless you are only testing.

Once the setup is completed, and Omniscope has been activated, you will be able to use Omniscope by pointing the browser to the machine's public ip address/domain name.

Important note: Omniscope activation uses the machine's HD number for identification purposes. Therefore, it is recommended that the administrator chooses to preserve the virtual machine's HD number. The additional cloud cost for this option is negligible; however, it proves to be a more practical method than having to deactivate the Omniscope license key every time the VM is switched off.

It is recommended to configure the external base URL in Omniscope (from the Admin section). This will allow Omniscope to generate valid URLs when sharing resources.

Omniscope is now installed and configured on the system, and it is ready to use.

You can shutdown/restart the machine as needed, and Omniscope will start up automatically.

Note: Omniscope activation stores information on the disk. Therefore, it is recommended that the administrator chooses to preserve the virtual machine's disk. The additional cloud cost for this option is negligible; however, it proves to be a more practical method than having to deactivate the Omniscope license key every time the VM is switched off.
